Drug Cartels Using Social Media to Improve their Image

Introduction

In a previous post[1], I analyzed three years of Twitter data from Mexico to corroborate a study by Dr. Antoine Nouvet with the SecDev Foundation. Dr. Nouvet found that Mexican cartel members where increasingly using social media to speak directly with the people of Mexico. This strategy reached an apex in September 2013 when the Cártel del Golfo used social media to publicize their humanitarian aid efforts following Hurricane Ingrid’s mass destruction in many poor areas of Mexico.
